If you aren’t too sure about using LED lighting, the Beautiful Things Lighting team has some information to make you feel a little more comfortable with your knowledge of this lighting type and some of the differences it possesses.

What is LED Lighting?

Explaining the ins and outs of LED lighting would require an explanation of moderately complex electrical technicalities. For our purposes, there are only a few things you need to know about LED. First off, LEDs are comprised of one or more negatively charged semiconductors which light up when supplied with voltage. This makes electrons combine together to make light (a photon). This separates LED from incandescent, which uses a heated filament to create light, and a fluorescent, which uses heated gas to create light. So, after that quick sciencey rundown, what else makes LED a quality option?

Brightness Measurement

benfitsofledlighting_blog_innerimageWhen you are measuring the brightness of a fluorescent or incandescent bulb, you are looking at the wattage measurement to ensure it is safe for your home. Rather than doing this, when it comes to LED lights you will be looking at lumens. Lumens tend to equate to roughly four to five times the watts as a normal incandescent or fluorescent, but this is a rough estimate. The lumens measurement is new and if you are considering the switch, ask your lighting professionals because your wattage knowledge will become almost obsolete.

Versatility

Soft and bright white used to be the only options when it came to light color from your typical fluorescent and incandescent bulbs. When you make the switch to LED, however, you open up a world of possibilities. These lights can be made into numerous colors, not simply blue, red, or yellow. There are a lot of different apps and technology that you can incorporate in your lighting system to open up options. You can also apply a dimmer that is specific for your bulbs and your lighting system which will allow you to control and dim individual lights, rather than the entire room.

Longevity

Because of their electrical nature, you increase the life of your lightbulbs when using LED. As we mentioned earlier, these bulbs use semiconductors, so they are less reliant on non-conducting mediums. As a result, you can obtain more life out of them, potentially years rather than months of high-usage bulbs in other categories. Choosing a new lighting system, picking a new lighting fixture, or making a change to a new type of bulb can be overwhelming if you try to do it yourself.
