Types of Lamps

Table Lamps

Used on end tables and nightstands to offer fill and task lighting.

Desk Lamps

The task light that is needed to reduce eyestrain.

Buffet or Candlestick Lamps

Used on buffets, dressers, and other places when a light is needed, and space is tight.

Floor Lamps

Can be separated into these types.

  • Six-Way Floor Lamps: Provide fill lighting and up lighting to illuminate the room. These lamps are great when there is no center light in the space.
  • Bridge Lamps: This style has been around for over a century and is popular when adding a downward reading light near a chair or between two chairs.
  • Torchiere Lamps: The purpose of the torchiere is to illuminate a room when there are no ceiling fixtures in the room.

When combining table and floor lamps, get the correct scale; lamps are the function art in the room. Consider the size of the living space and the furniture in the room. Table lamps do not always have to match. To create a dramatic flair, incorporate two different styles of lamps in the same space.

Table and floor lamps are multi-purpose accessories. They provide fill lighting when setting the mood of the room or with the flick of the switch, they become task lights for reading. To get the best light for reading, doing your favorite crossword puzzle, or craft position the light so that it comes from behind the shoulder. Place the lamp at the right or left of the seat.

Not all lamps are created equally. When considering your table and floor lamp purchase, there are a wide range of prices to choose from. You must first consider the style of lamp and the rooms décor. Next is the material the lamps are made from. A lamp made of resin will typically be less expensive than a lamp made from a natural material like brass or crystal. Natural materials look better and last longer. If you plan on having the room look good for a long time, choose natural materials. Weight is also an important consideration. A heavier lamp is not prone to tipping when bumped into.
