Top Things to Consider when Buying Lighting

If you are preparing to start a home renovation or redecorating project, there are dozens of things to consider. These choices range from major ones, like whether you only want to have work done in certain rooms or you want to overhaul your entire house, to relatively minor things, such as what finish you would like on your cabinet hardware. One of the things many homeowners don't consider until relatively late in the planning process is lighting design. Choosing light fixtures is, however, one of the most critical aspects of any home remodeling job. The type of lighting you ultimately select can truly make or break a space. As you read on, you will discover some things to consider when you start buying light fixtures for your upcoming job.

  1. Kitchen - In the kitchen, there are all sorts of things to think about when it comes to creating a functional lighting plan. You must, for example, have at least one overhead light that will illuminate the entire room. In the kitchen, however, task lighting is also extremely important. If you have an island, for example, you should make sure it has strategically placed pendant lights hanging over it. Furthermore, adding under-cabinet lighting to the bottoms of your upper cabinets will make it easier to chop vegetables and do other prepwork on your main countertops.
  2. Bathroom - As in the kitchen, bathroom lighting schemes need to be created with individual tasks in mind. If, for instance, you wear make-up on a regular basis, you should make sure you have a vanity with bright lighting that will illuminate your face. Furthermore, you should make sure your shower area has ample lighting in case you are using it after dark. You should also consider whether or not you'd like to have any ambient light in your bathroom. Having a dimmer switch installed can be nice if you have a soaker tub, for instance.
  3. Bedroom - The type of lighting design a bedroom needs largely depends on who the space belongs to. In master bedrooms, for example, the same kind of ambient lighting you might use in a bathroom is popular. This allows for relaxation and can be romantic. In children's and teens' bedrooms, however, overhead lighting that allows for easy, bright playtime and studying is extremely important.
  4. Den - If your home has a den or a study, you might want it to have a dark, moody feel, especially if it features the rich wood and deep colors that are traditionally used in these spaces. To achieve this, forgo overhead lighting and focus on adding table lamps and floor lamps around the room. If, for instance, you have a chess board, make sure it can be efficiently illuminated. The same goes for reading nooks and desks.
