What is Task Lighting

Proper lighting is essential regardless of the task you are doing. General room lights may not always be the best solution for a certain task at hand. Ambient light may not always be enough for the task at hand. Sometimes the room lighting is too much or too little. That is why task lighting was created. Task lighting provides the proper amount of light needed to complete common tasks. Task lights are used for many common tasks such as sewing, reading, small repairs, model construction, writing and many other activities.

What is task lighting?

Task lighting is a type of lighting that allows you to enhance the illumination in a certain area to help accomplish common tasks. Task lighting makes the completion of a task easier as opposed to ambient lighting. Reading lamps, food prep lights and workshop lights are the most common types of task lights used.

Many people confuse accent lights with task lights. The main difference is the area covered with the lighting. Task lights provide more light covering a larger work area in a room that may already have some ambient light. Whereas accent lights provide less light to only highlight and emphasize a certain object. Another difference between task lights and accent lights is that some task lights can usually be pointed to one location or another where accent lights are usually fixed and cannot be moved easily. Finally, task lights allow an individual to adjust the lighting levels as needed. Some people will require more light complete a certain task while other people may require less light to complete that same task. That is the great thing about task lighting. It is very customizable.

Different Types of Task Lights

There are several types of task lights that can be used in your home or office. Here are the most popular:

Reading/Desk Lamps: Reading lamps can be small desk lamps or larger floor lamps. They will provide ample light over a desk or a couch for reading. This is probably the most widely used type of task light in the market. They come in a variety of shapes, forms, and designs to meet your needs.

Pendant Lamps: Pendant lamps are usually used in kitchens over countertops to illuminate food prep and serving areas. Pendant lights can be fixed mount and powered through a wall switch or can also be battery powered using an on/off switch.

Directional Gimbal Recessed: These are a type of recessed light that can pivot and turn to offer directional light. They offer direct downlight exactly where you need it. These are good for near fire places and on sloped ceilings

There are many different options when it comes to task lighting. Task lighting can also have a significant environmental impact by reducing energy consumption. Task lighting is also very customizable to the individual person. Do your research and make sure to choose task lights that are the best and most practical for your required tasks while adding beauty to your home or office.
