Chandeliers add a decadent finishing touch to any room.
Chandeliers are easily the biggest statement maker of any lighting fixture. They have a rich history, and are an iconic type of lighting. They are dramatically featured in famous movies such as The Titanic, The Phantom of the Opera, and Beauty and the Beast. They’re featured in famous historical buildings such as the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg, as well as The Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul. There’s even a famous pop song called “Chandelier”, by Sia.
While chandeliers are well-documented as a famous and iconic piece of décor, as well as a fantastic way to light up an entire room, there’s a lot to consider when choosing your own iconic focal piece. The first thing to consider, as for almost any lighting fixture, is size. Chandeliers draw a lot of attention, which is great, but you don’t want them to overshadow the rest of the room completely. A larger room allows for a large chandelier, hence the enormous chandeliers we see in ball rooms in movies. A smaller room requires a smaller chandelier.
Ceiling height is also crucial, as you don’t want anyone in your home to bump their head. Chandeliers can be placed on even low ceilings, though, above something like a dinner table, where no one will be walking anyway. Even then, though, you want to make sure that your chandelier isn’t as wide as your table, so that nobody will knock into it as the stand up from their chair.
The next thing to consider is placement. A chandelier usually serves as the main lighting for an entire room, and also often acts as a visual focal point for a room. As a result, a chandelier usually goes best somewhere more centrally located. Obviously, it depends on the chandelier’s size and function, as well as the ever-important personal preference, but more central is a good rule of thumb. Brightness of bulbs is also something to consider, as with any type of lighting, but especially with chandeliers as there are often multiple bulbs. Because of the multiple bulbs, lumens and wattage should probably be less high than other, single bulb lighting fixtures.
